چکیده

Thc sterilizing effect of supercritical carben dioxide (SC-CO,) is described as compared with gaseous C02(G-CO,) and liquid CO,(L-CO,). Baker's yeast, ltscherichia eoli, Staphylococcus aure us and eonidia'ofAspergiilus niger were sterilized by treating with SC-CO, at 200 atm and 350C when the water contcnt of each microorganism was 70 .90%, However, dry cells with a water content of 2 .1O% could not be sterilizcd undcr the same conditions. No sterilizing effect from SCC02 on endospores of Baeillus subtilis and B. stearothertnophilus was observed. G-C02 and L-C02 produced no sterilizing effect against both wet and dry baker's yeast cells, while wet E. coti cells were sterilized with G-CO,, Although dry conidia of A. niger could not be sterilized with SC-CO, alone, the addition of ethanol or acetic acid to SC-C02 made it possible to sterilize these, Without any decrease in their enzymatic activities, E. coli and baker's yeast in a-amylase and lipase preparations were sterilized with SC-CO,.

Improved Sterilization of Sensitive Biomaterials with Supercritical Carbon Dioxide at Low Temperature

The development of bio-resorbable implant materials is rapidly going on. Sterilization of those materials is inevitable to assure the hygienic requirements for critical medical devices according to the medical device directive (MDD, 93/42/EG). Biopolymer-containing biomaterials are often highly sensitive towards classical sterilization procedures like steam, ethylene oxide treatment or gamma ir...

Effective terminal sterilization using supercritical carbon dioxide.

Gentle alternatives to existing sterilization methods are called for by rapid advances in biomedical technologies. Supercritical fluid technologies have found applications in a wide range of areas and have been explored for use in the inactivation of medical contaminants. In particular, supercritical CO(2) is appealing for sterilization due to the ease at which the supercritical state is attain...
